Interior design deals with the development and enhancement of the interiors, sometimes even the exterior, of a space or a building. In recent years, the popularity of interior design as a career has grown due to the abundance of creative opportunities and job security. Creativity, innovation and technical dexterity are the basic requirements of a budding interior designer.   • Types of courses in Interior Design


  • 1. Certificate courses :

    These are the most elementary courses, designed to introduce you to the field of Interior Design, up to six months in duration. There are certain institutions providing certificate courses of upto 3 years. These courses cover the main topics related to interior designing, such as commercial and residential design, computer tools to aid in design, drawing techniques and financial, legal as well as ethical considerations.

    2. Diploma courses :

    If you are looking for a short-term course to gain basic knowledge of the subject, then a diploma in interior design is the option for you. The duration of the diploma may vary from nine months to two years, depending on the scope of the course. Diploma courses are suitable for students who wish to get a job after a year or two of studying. You can also supplement your diploma with advanced diplomas, which provide depth in any particular area that you might wish to study further. Several interior designing institutes in and around Pune offer diplomas in subjects like Interior and Exterior Design, Interior Decoration, Landscape Design, Computer-aided Interior Design, etc.

    3. Degree courses :

    Degree courses are the most exhaustive of all and comprehensively cover most subjects related to interior designing. These are conventional graduation degree courses, such as Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, Bachelor of Architecture Interior Design, Bachelor of Designing in Industrial Design, etc., which need three to five years of study.   • Eligibility Criteria and Entrance Examinations :

  • Most of the courses in Interior Design require students to pass the HSC exam from any state board or other equivalent, recognised education boards with the minimum aggregate of 50-55% from any of the three streams (Science, Arts or Commerce). Apart from this, if you wish to pursue a Bachelor’s degree, you need to clear an additional entrance exam, some of which are listed below.
